They do need a steeply sloping roof ( greater than 22 degrees ) so that the rain runs off quickly and they will last longer if they haven't got ivy or other undergrowth growing over them which reduces the air flow.

The shakes are 13 inches (330 mm)long and between 3 inches to 8 inches (75-200 mm) wide. We tend to make English style parallel shakes (about 10mm thick) as the wood we make them out of suits this style.

We can make tapered shakes but we get significantly less per disk so they cost more. We can make longer shakes (16inch) but again we get less from the material so they cost more.

Another thing to consider is the exposure.

For garden buildings, buildings with steep roofs, vertical walls or a waterproof (breathable) membrane behind you can use half exposure. Low sloping roofs or ones over a habitable space or no membrane would be better with third exposure which needs more shakes. For half exposure 13inch shakes a guide price is £80 per sq mtr.

Our shakes are made to order so contact us for lead times.
